Module 4 is where electrical theory becomes electronics — semiconductors, discrete components and the building blocks of avionic circuits. It sits on top of Module 3, so a shaky Module 3 makes Module 4 harder than it needs to be. Studied in the right order, it is very manageable.

What Module 4 covers

Module 4 covers semiconductor theory: diodes (including the PN junction, rectifiers, Zener and photodiodes), transistors (as switches and amplifiers) and integrated circuits. It continues into printed circuit boards, and into servomechanisms — feedback, open- and closed-loop control, and the synchro and resolver devices used to sense and transmit position.

The theory examiners test

  • The PN junction and how a diode conducts one way
  • Half-wave and full-wave rectification and smoothing
  • The Zener diode as a voltage regulator
  • The transistor as a switch and as an amplifier
  • Logic and operational-amplifier basics
  • Open- versus closed-loop control and the role of feedback

How to study it

Electronics is abstract, so — as with Module 3 — the fastest way to understand a rectifier, a Zener regulator or a transistor switch is to watch one work. Manipulate the input and see the output change, then reinforce with question practice. Make sure your Module 3 AC theory is solid first, because rectification and filtering assume it. Finish with a timed mock at your category length.
