Module 5 is the digital and instrument-systems module — heavily weighted for B2 avionics but relevant to B1 too. It rewards a methodical approach: get comfortable with number systems and logic first, and the data-bus and display material becomes far easier.

What Module 5 covers

Module 5 covers number systems (binary, octal, hexadecimal and BCD) and data conversion; data buses, including ARINC 429 and other standards; logic circuits — gates, combinational and sequential logic; the basic computer structure and the fetch-execute cycle; analogue-to-digital and digital-to-analogue conversion; electromagnetic environment (EMI, lightning and HIRF protection); and electronic display and instrument systems such as EFIS, EICAS and ECAM.

  • Converting between binary, decimal, octal and hexadecimal
  • Logic gates and their truth tables; adders and flip-flops
  • The ARINC 429 data bus — word format, speeds and topology
  • Analogue-to-digital conversion and quantisation

  • Electrostatic-sensitive device handling and EMI protection

How to study it

Start with number systems and logic — they are learnable to certainty with practice, and everything else leans on them. Use simulations for number conversion, logic gates and the ARINC 429 word so the abstract ideas become concrete. Then layer on the instrument-system knowledge. Because much of Module 5 is procedural, repeated question practice pays off quickly.
