What is the purpose and modern operating frequency of an ELT?
An Emergency Locator Transmitter automatically broadcasts a distress signal after a crash (or when switched on manually) so search-and-rescue can locate the aircraft. Modern ELTs transmit a digital signal on 406 MHz, received by the Cospas-Sarsat satellite system and often encoding the aircraft identity and (with GPS) position, plus a 121.5 MHz signal for final homing.
