Integrated, Cabin & Information Systems
On-board maintenance systems (OMS/CMC), integrated modular avionics (IMA), cabin systems and information systems.
Integrated, cabin & information systems — summary notes
Free- ON-BOARD MAINTENANCE SYSTEMS (OMS, ATA 45): a Central Maintenance Computer (CMC) collects Built-In Test Equipment (BITE) fault data from the aircraft systems, correlates it, stores fault history and lets the technician run system tests from one terminal — speeding troubleshooting.
- INTEGRATED MODULAR AVIONICS (IMA, ATA 42): instead of many dedicated 'black boxes' (federated LRUs), IMA runs multiple software functions on shared, standardised computing modules housed in common cabinets, with robust PARTITIONING so one function cannot corrupt another.
- CABIN SYSTEMS (ATA 44): the cabin management/intercommunication system, passenger address, in-flight entertainment (IFE) and passenger service functions.
- INFORMATION SYSTEMS (ATA 46): flight-deck and cabin information — electronic flight bags (EFB), network servers, and the data links/loading that support them, kept separate from the certified flight-critical systems by design.
- These digital architectures reduce weight and wiring but demand configuration/software control and careful data-loading procedures.
- ⚠ Exam trap: IMA replaces many dedicated LRUs with shared, PARTITIONED computing modules in common cabinets (not one box per function); the Central Maintenance Computer (OMS) gathers BITE data from the systems for centralised fault diagnosis.
How does Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) differ from a traditional federated avionics architecture?
In a federated architecture each function has its own dedicated line-replaceable unit (its own box, processor and wiring). IMA instead hosts many functions as software applications running on shared, standardised processing modules in common cabinets, using strict time/space partitioning so applications are isolated from one another. This cuts weight, wiring and spares, but shifts the emphasis to software configuration control and partition integrity.
