A modern ELT transmits a coded digital distress signal on 406 MHz, which is picked up by the Cospas-Sarsat satellite constellation; the message can carry the aircraft identity and, if GPS-equipped, its position. Rescuers then home in on the aircraft using the ELT's lower-power 121.5 MHz signal for the final localisation.
