Main ideas
  • On-board maintenance systems (OMS, ATA 45) centralise fault management: a Central Maintenance Computer (CMC) collects Built-In Test Equipment (BITE) data from the aircraft systems, correlates related messages and stores a fault history.
  • BITE lets each system continuously monitor and test itself and report failures with a fault code, so the technician does not have to test every box individually.
  • The CMC CORRELATES cascaded faults — one root failure can trigger many symptom messages, and the CMC identifies the likely single cause — greatly speeding troubleshooting.
  • The maintenance terminal lets the technician read current and stored faults, run system/ground tests, and identify the failed line-replaceable unit (LRU).
  • Fault data can be downlinked (e.g. via ACARS) so the maintenance organisation is ready with spares/actions before the aircraft lands.
  • ⚠ Exam trap: the Central Maintenance Computer gathers BITE data and CORRELATES cascaded messages to point at the ROOT fault — it does not just list every symptom; this is what speeds B2 troubleshooting.
Solved examples
  1. A single sensor fails and the crew sees several unrelated-looking system messages. How does the central maintenance computer help the technician?

Many systems that used that sensor's data each raise their own fault/symptom message, so the flight deck shows a cascade. The CMC correlates these related messages against its logic and identifies the single root cause (the failed sensor/LRU), presenting that rather than sending the technician chasing each symptom. It also stores the event and supports a ground test to confirm the fix.
