- The powerplant installation carries engine loads into the airframe through mounts designed to take thrust, weight and torque while allowing thermal growth; the QEC (quick engine change) unit bundles the engine with its cowlings, accessories and connections for fast replacement.
- Fire zones are separated by firewalls and drained/ventilated; a fire-detection system (continuous-loop or discrete sensors) warns the crew, and fire-extinguishing bottles discharge an agent into the zone after the engine is shut down and fuel/air are isolated.
- Engine health/condition monitoring trends key parameters (EGT margin, N1/N2, fuel flow, oil consumption, vibration) over time to spot deterioration before it becomes a failure; borescope inspection views internal gas-path parts without stripping the engine.
- Ground operation must respect start limits, stabilisation and cool-down times, EGT/RPM limits and the hazards of intake suction and exhaust blast/heat; ground running is done to procedure in a safe area.
- Storage and preservation protect an engine out of service: inhibiting oil in the oil and fuel systems, desiccant and blanks/covers to keep moisture and contamination out, with defined re-preservation intervals, and full de-preservation before return to service.
- ⚠ Exam trap: fire extinguishant is discharged AFTER the engine is shut down and the fuel/air supply to the zone is isolated (a running engine keeps feeding a fire); trend monitoring watches EGT margin and vibration to catch deterioration early, and blanks/covers must be removed at de-preservation.
What is the correct order of actions on an engine fire warning, and why is shutting down before discharging the bottle important?
Close the throttle/HP cock to shut the engine down and isolate the fuel, then close the LP fuel valve and pull the fire handle to shut off fuel, hydraulics and bleed air to the zone, THEN discharge the extinguisher. A running engine keeps pumping fuel and air into the zone, feeding the fire, cutting those supplies first lets the agent actually smother it.
