  • The CERTIFICATE OF RELEASE TO SERVICE (CRS) is the statement by authorised certifying staff that the recorded maintenance was done in accordance with approved data and the aircraft or component is fit to return to service. It closes the task, gives traceability of who certified what and when, and is a legal prerequisite for operation.
  • The CRS is issued only after any required independent/duplicate inspection of critical items (e.g. a control-system reconnection) and confirmation that all work is complete and tools are accounted for.
  • LIFE-LIMITED components have a mandatory limit in flight hours, cycles or calendar time, beyond which they are removed regardless of condition because failure would be hazardous. They are tracked by serial number, with accumulated hours/cycles recorded, carried forward at installation and updated in service.
  • The Airworthiness Limitations Section (ALS) and the maintenance programme define the limits; log cards and operator records ensure a part is removed on or before its limit and a life-expired part is scrapped or reworked as permitted.
  • Stores procedures cover correct storage, shelf life, batch traceability, and the segregation of serviceable, unserviceable and quarantined parts, with only released, traceable parts fitted to aircraft.
  • Quality assurance audits the system to confirm procedures are followed; quality control checks the product. Independent inspection catches single-person error on critical tasks.
  • ⚠ Exam trap: a life-limited part is removed at its limit regardless of its apparent condition, 'it still looks fine' is not a basis to keep it in service.

  1. A life-limited turbine disc reaches its cycle limit but shows no visible defects at inspection. What is the correct action?

    It must be removed from service and scrapped or reworked as permitted, regardless of its apparent condition. The life limit exists because failure would be catastrophic and is not predicted by inspection, so reaching the cycle limit is itself the removal criterion.

  2. Why is an independent (duplicate) inspection required after reconnecting a flight-control system?

    A control-system misconnection is a critical error that a single person can make and then fail to notice. A second, independent inspection by another authorised person checks the work before the CRS is issued, so the aircraft is not released with a hidden control error.
