Materials & Hardware

Ferrous/non-ferrous materials, composites, fasteners and pipes.

A · B1 · B2

Cat A covers the same sub-sections as the other categories here; only the mock exam paper differs in length.

  1. 6.1(b) / 6.2(b)

    Mechanical Properties & Testing

    Level 1

Stress, strain and Young's modulus; the tensile test, hardness, ductility and toughness; fatigue and creep.

  2. 6.1(a)

    Ferrous Materials

    Level 1

Carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, heat treatment and identification.

  3. 6.2(a)

    Non-Ferrous Materials

    Level 1

Aluminium, titanium, magnesium, copper and nickel alloys, age hardening and their aircraft uses.

  4. 6.3.1(a)

    Composite & Non-Metallic Materials

    Level 1

Fibres and matrices, fibre orientation and sandwich structure, and identifying the common composites and transparencies.

  5. 6.3.1(b) / 6.3.2 / 6.3.3

    Composite Repair, Wood & Fabric

    Level 1

Detecting and repairing composite damage, wooden structure, and doped fabric covering. Category B2 does not sit these sub-sections.

  6. 6.4

    Corrosion

    Level 2

The electrochemical process, forms of corrosion, the galvanic series, prevention and treatment.

  7. 6.5.1 / 6.5.2

    Fasteners, Threads, Bolts & Screws

    Level 2

Screw threads, aircraft bolts, studs, screws and nuts, grip length, and torque loading.

  8. 6.5.3

    Locking Devices

    Level 2

Split pins, lockwire, self-locking nuts, tab washers, circlips and keys, positive and friction locking.

  9. 6.5.4

    Aircraft Rivets

    Level 1

Solid and blind rivets, alloy codes and ice-box rivets, sizing and edge distance, defects and removal.

  10. 6.6

    Pipes & Unions

    Level 2

Rigid pipes and flexible hoses, identification, 37° flared and flareless unions, and installation rules.

  11. 6.7 / 6.8

    Springs & Bearings

    Level 1

Spring types and spring rate; plain and rolling-element bearings, load types, fit and failure modes.

  12. 6.9 / 6.10

    Transmissions & Control Cables

    Level 1

Gear types and gear ratios; steel-wire control cables, turnbuckles, pulleys and tensioning.

  13. 6.11

    Electrical Cables & Connectors

    Level 1

Aircraft wire and AWG, circuit protection sized to the wire, crimped terminations, connectors and screening.

  14. 6 · EXAM

    Mock Exam

    Level 1

Timed EASA-style Category A paper across all twelve sub-sections, 52 questions in 65 minutes, 75% to pass.
