Main ideas
  • Noise above safe exposure limits causes both hearing damage and short-term distraction that increases error risk during precise tasks.
  • Poor illumination directly reduces inspection quality, cracks, corrosion and correct wire colour codes are all missed more often in dim or glare-affected light.
  • Extreme climate and temperature (hangar or ramp) reduce manual dexterity and concentration; cold hands are clumsy hands.
  • Vibration and motion (e.g. working near a running auxiliary power unit) reduce fine motor control and can mask abnormal sounds that would otherwise be a diagnostic cue.
  • A physically complex or cluttered work environment increases the chance of foreign object debris (FOD) and of a dropped tool going unnoticed.
  • ⚠ Exam trap: the control for poor detection is to fix the lighting (sufficient, glare-free, correct angle), not to rely on the inspector's diligence to compensate.

  1. A borescope inspection for hairline cracks is carried out under a single portable floodlight at an awkward angle. What is the human factors risk?

    Inadequate, glare-prone illumination reduces the chance of detecting a fine crack, the control is to use task-appropriate lighting (diffuse, sufficient lux, correct angle) rather than relying on inspector diligence to compensate.
